The Detroit Lions are bolstering their secondary with a new addition. According to Jeremy Fowler, the team is signing safety Jammie Robinson from the Kansas City Chiefs' practice squad. Robinson, a 2023 fifth-round pick of the Carolina Panthers, brings valuable experience and potential to the Lions' defense.
His journey began with the Panthers, where he played in 15 games, starting in two. However, he was waived last December, and the Arizona Cardinals claimed him. Although he didn't make the game-day roster for the rest of the season, he remained with the team throughout training camp. When the Cardinals didn't retain him for their 53-man roster this season, the Chiefs quickly signed him to their practice squad.
Robinson's defensive contributions are notable. In his 21 total game appearances with the Panthers, he recorded 20 tackles over 75 defensive snaps and 366 special teams snaps. He played both nickel and box safety for Carolina, showcasing versatility.
What's more intriguing is Robinson's connection to the Lions. He reportedly met with the team at the NFL Combine in 2023, and interestingly, current Lions linebackers coach Shaun Dion Hamilton was his coach at the Senior Bowl. This connection adds a layer of familiarity to the signing.
His physical attributes and playing style are also noteworthy. Robinson possesses a compact frame and exceptional speed, making him a quick and agile defensive back. His testing numbers were average, but his focus on technique sometimes led to rigidity, affecting his performance. However, when he relaxed, his natural skills shone through, as evidenced by his impressive figure-eight drills.
The Lions' decision to sign Robinson is timely. With Brian Branch suspended for one game, Kerby Joseph's status uncertain due to a knee injury, and the need for additional cornerback support, Robinson's addition provides much-needed depth at safety. The team had an open roster spot after cutting safety Loren Strickland, making this move feasible.
In October alone, the Lions have made several strategic additions to their secondary, including:
- CB Tre Flowers (practice squad)
- CB Nick Whiteside (practice squad, later promoted)
- CB Arthur Maulet (practice squad)
- CB Kendall Fuller (practice squad)
- S Jammie Robinson (active roster)
This move further strengthens the Lions' defensive depth, addressing the challenges posed by injuries and suspensions.
