Unveiling the Role of Leptin: A Potential Biomarker for Egg Production Efficiency

Leptin, a hormone that regulates food intake and reproduction, has been identified as a potential biomarker for egg production efficiency in poultry. This discovery could revolutionize breeding strategies and boost productivity for poultry producers. According to research conducted by professors Sadequllah Ahmadi and Takeshi Ohkubo from Ibaraki University's College of Agriculture, leptin functions uniquely in birds compared to mammals.

In mammals, leptin is secreted by fat cells, but in birds, it's primarily expressed in the brain and gonads. This difference in expression affects how leptin influences reproductive processes, potentially explaining variations in breeding efficiency between different bird types. Ahmadi explains, "In mammals, leptin's role is well-understood, but in birds, its mechanisms are still unclear. A deeper understanding of leptin's role in reproduction could significantly enhance reproductive efficiency and sustainability in poultry production."

The research reveals that leptin supports egg production and ovarian function, even when feed availability is limited. This means leptin can help maintain hormone synthesis and protect follicular development when energy intake is low, making it a valuable tool for maintaining productivity in challenging production environments. Interestingly, the research also highlights how leptin affects layer and broiler birds differently.

In layers, higher levels of leptin can improve egg-laying performance by enhancing follicular activation and steroid hormone production. However, in broilers, excessive leptin activity may cause early follicular growth, leading to follicular depletion and a shorter breeding life. Understanding these differences could enable more targeted breeding strategies based on bird type, according to Ahmadi. Further research is needed to explore the full range of leptin's roles throughout the lifetime of different bird types.
